Part 1 – Where the Watts Go:
Major power consumption in your facility and how to reduce it.
Who Should Attend:
Water and wastewater operators, plant managers, energy managers, engineering staff, and finance leaders who want a clearer picture of where their energy dollar is going, and how to recover some of it
Overview:
Roughly 85% of industrial electricity consumption is by electric motors. In a municipal water facility that means pumps, aerators, compressors etc. Most organizations treat that electricity consumption and associated cost as fixed – the price of moving water. It isn’t. A measurable share of it is lost to power quality issues, leading to motor inefficiency and higher than necessary cost. Those same issues add to your maintenance burden, by accelerating equipment wear and reducing life span.
This session is a tour of the major electricity consumers inside a typical water or wastewater plant, why a portion of that consumption is recoverable, and how water utilities are addressing it without capital budget. We will walk through the technical levers – what they do in practice, and how Berkshire Power’s subscription-based facilities optimization model works for municipal water operations. Customer case studies will illustrate the results.
Among the questions to be discussed:
- Why is 85% of your plant’s electricity moving water — and how much of it is wasted?
- How are water utilities cutting 10–30% off their electricity costs without capital expense?
- What is the impact of voltage management on sensitive equipment and electricity consumption?
- How does real time energy monitoring reduce electricity consumption and prevented unscheduled downtime/stoppages?
- Why does the subscription model fit municipal water better than capital procurement?
Attendees will be offered a complimentary facility-level assessment from Berkshire Power to identify where energy is being lost in their facility and how to stop it.
Host:
Ed Houghton, CET
Executive Director, OMWA
Ed Houghton has more than 45 years of experience in both water and municipal-utility experience, as the long-time President and CEO of Collus PowerStream Corp. and Collingwood Public Utilities and the Executive Director of the OMWA since 2015.In 2012, while he was still with the Collingwood Public Utilities, Ed was the recipient of the OMWA Exceptional Merit Award, presented to the individual who has made an important contribution to the waterworks sector over an extended period of time. For distinguished service to the water-supply field, in 2005, Ed was recognized with the most prestigious award for water in North America – the George Warren Fuller Award. As the Executive Director of the Ontario Municipal Water Association, Ed has emphasized, to all that will listen, that OMWA is here because of our members and that our goal is to assist our member municipal professionals to be the best that they can be and to provide Ontario citizens with exceptional water, wastewater and stormwater services.
Speaker:

Marhsall Wilde
Managing Director, Berkshire Power
Marshall leads Berkshire Power, a facilities optimization company with more than 11,000 installations across North America. Berkshire’s technology helps water utilities and industrial operators reduce energy consumption by 10–30%, extend equipment life, and surface hidden inefficiencies in electrical infrastructure — without upfront capital. He works directly with operators, plant managers, and finance leaders to identify where electricity is being lost in real time and how to recover it.
