Position Summary

The Water & Wastewater Maintenance Operator works in a team environment and is primarily responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance and compliance of the municipality’s water, wastewater and stormwater systems. This position is required to respond to after-hours calls and alarms associated with the municipality’s water, wastewater and stormwater systems.

 

Responsibilities

  • Performs all operational and maintenance duties for assigned water, wastewater and stormwater facilities and Enviro Depot.
  • Monitors and performs maintenance on hydrants, valves, manholes, water mains, sewer mains, services, water well house, sewage treatment plant, stormwater systems etc.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations, approvals and orders, and guidelines.
  • Adjusts, inspects, and evaluates processes and equipment performance to optimize efficiency and effectiveness in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Carries out various test procedures and process calculations required to monitor performance.
  • Maintains logs and records pertaining to system performance and equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Participates in Overall Responsible Operator rotation for the municipality’s facilities as assigned.
  • Undertakes special projects and performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with corporate objectives.

 

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • College Diploma in Chemical or Environmental Technology or a related field of study.

 

Experience

  • 3-4 years of progressive experience in a related professional and operational experience in the water/wastewater industry.
  • Experience in municipal drinking water or industrial wastewater operations and regulatory compliance preferred.

 

Specialized Training & Licences 

  • At a minimum shall possess an Operator In Training (OIT) certificate of competency in water distribution, wastewater treatment and collection issued by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. Successful candidates must obtain higher levels of certification up to or one above the current required level of certification of facilities upon hire.

 

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of water, wastewater and stormwater processes and technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of the relevant regulatory and legislative acts, codes, policies, guidelines, and procedures related to water and wastewater operations and maintenance.
  • Sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to gain entry to confined spaces and able to perform role as top-person in confined spaces.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

 

Other Requirements

  • Minimum of a valid Ontario class G driver’s license in good standing.
  • Criminal Records Check.
  • Able to lift 22 kg/50 lbs.

 

Hours & Conditions of Work

Normal hours of work are 40 hours per week, on a rotation schedule which will include weekend work. This position requires the individual to be on call after hours and weekends. 

This position primarily works at the plants or in the field, works with hazardous products containing MSDS, and requires moderate physical effort to operate and maintain equipment. The use of Personal Protective Equipment required at all times.

 

Compensation

Middlesex Centre offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive employee benefit plan, including participation in the OMERS pension plan for this position. 

Compensation for this position is currently $32.42 to $38.60 per hour.
