JOB SCOPE:
Reporting to the Water Supervisor, the Water Operator operates and performs maintenance on the municipal water treatment facilities, pumping stations, and distribution systems in adherence with Provincial legislation.
DUTIES: (May be modified according to license)
- Monitors, tests, samples, analyzes and maintains all systems and instrumentation daily to ensure efficient operation and compliance
- Adds chemicals for treatment, e.g. chlorine, etc., as required
- Obtains water samples and perform lab tests as required by the municipal licenses, permits, and MOE regulations
- Completes back-up power generation system weekly and transfer water treatment plant operation onto backup power on a monthly maintenance schedule
- Completes biweekly physical inspection of the water treatment plant building and grounds
- Compiles data and assists in the preparation of monthly and quarterly reports
- Participates, as needed, in regulatory/compliance audits and inspections
- Investigates resident complaints/concerns, performs maintenance/follows up accordingly
- Operates power tools and performs physical labour as directed
- Performs annual fire hydrant flushing; performs inspections and required maintenance
- Performs water connection and disconnections
- Performs the installation, inspection, and maintenance of water meters
- Locates water infrastructure
- Provides on-call support during emergencies such as spills, backups, flooding, breaks, accidents, and plant failure, outside the normal working day
- Practices a safe working environment following legislation and Municipal policies
- Provides stand-by on a rotating basis during weekends, and is available for evening and weekend on-call duty
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum completion of an OSSD diploma or equivalent. Completion of Operator In Training (OIT) examination or valid Water Distribution and Supply Subsystem license under Ontario Regulation 128/04 preferred
- Water Meters Installers certificate considered an asset
- Knowledge of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) operating systems
- Knowledge of ultraviolet disinfection systems
- Completion of training in the following areas: locator training, First Aid, WHMIS, Book 7, Working at Heights
- Trained and experienced in the following considered an asset:

- Water main construction and service installations and repairs
- Safe operation of fire hydrants
- Safe trenching practices and precautions
- Confined Space Entry and Confined Space Rescue
- Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), chlorine gas handling and leak response
- Self-motivated, highly organized with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with the public, staff, and Council
- Effective communication skills (written and verbal)
- Proficient in MS Office
- Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
- Possess a valid Class G license. DZ license considered an asset
- Clear criminal records check required
Note: Water Certificates and licenses issued in Ontario are valid for a period of three years. To maintain the same class of certification or license you are required to meet specific experience and training requirements (120 hours of professional development each 3-year period) which is supported by the Municipality.
HOURS OF WORK:
- 40 hours/week, Monday – Thursday 6:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
- Rotational on-call (evenings and weekends). On call duty requires employees to be readily available within one (1) hour of headquarters for emergency services at other than normal working hours.
TOTAL COMPENSATION PACKAGE INCLUDES:
- Competitive pay ranges, progressively increasing with additional licensing:
- OIT Operator: $23.73 – $28.96/hour
- Class 1 Operator: $27.68 – $33.77/hour
- Class 2 Operator: $29.14 – $35.55/hour
- Class 3 Operator: $30.67 – $37.42/hour
