Track 2: Controlling Microorganizsms in Drinking Water – the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly

About the Course
Microorganisms play a huge role in drinking water operations, from source to tap. Some of these organisms have a positive impact (the good), some have a negative impact (the bad) and some are dangerous from a human health perspective (the ugly). Operators should be aware of the impact of microorganisms on drinking water processes and appropriate control methods. This course explores numerous examples of some common interactions involving microorganisms and methods of controlling these good, bad and ugly biological entities. Using the “good” microorganisms for beneficial purposes is also a focus of this training.
Learning objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize important microorganisms in source waters and throughout the treatment and distribution systems
- Understand some important interactions between these organisms that have an impact of water quality, both positive and negative
- Be aware of pathogenic organisms and how non-pathogens can influence the risk associated with human pathogens
- Understand the purpose and limitations of testing for indicator organisms
- Be familiar with operational details of disinfection
