Deb McIntosh

POLITICAL DIRECTOR

Deb McIntosh

How long have you been on the Board and what position do you currently hold? Just appointed April 2020

What municipality or organization do you represent? City of Greater Sudbury

What is your educational and professional background? I am an accountant, but most of my work has been in the not for profit sector in executive roles.

The OMWA is a not-for-profit organization and all Board positions, including yours, are all volunteer, what inspired you to become an OMWA Board Member?  I believe that water is our most precious resource and that we need to protect it. It has been one of my top priorities while in public office. Joining the OMWA Board is a natural extension of the work I want to accomplish while serving my community.

What do you hope to see in the future for OMWA? With reference to #4 above, I hope to see the  increased influence of the OMWA in provincial decisions that impact the safety of our water supply.

What would you say to a 16-year-old student considering a career path, in water? I would ask questions rather than “say” anything. I’d ask: What do you hope to achieve in your life/ what are your life goals? Why are you interested in pursuing a career in water? What aspect of water are you interested in?

What advice would you give to a new graduate considering a position in the water industry? Difficult for me to answer this question as I have no experience of working in the water industry. The only thing I would underscore is that the provision of water is a public service and that anyone looking to work in the water industry should have a sense of what it is to serve the community.

What’s your hometown?  I consider Greater Sudbury my home town, but I was born and spent many of my early  years  in Niagara Falls, ON

What brought you to Ontario? Born here

What was your first job? Highlight Drive In, Niagara Falls, ON

What challenges have you had to overcome in your career?  Balancing work and family life….I want it all.

What are some of your hobbies or how do you spend your free time? There is not a lot of free time as an elected official, but I do enjoy riding my bike, paddling my canoe, back county camping and  gardening. I loved rowing but had to give it up when I was elected.

What is something quirky about you? My family think this is my quirk; There is often a song in my head and periodically it comes out of my mouth in public places 🙂

What was your most prized toy as a child, and why? No toy. My bike was my most prized possession as a child because it could take me places.

If you could have a t-shirt printed with a message, what would it be?  (I am sure that I don’t have to remind you to ‘Keep it clean’…  “Be the Change”  I use to have this T-shirt and wore it until it was paper thin.
