The Opportunity

The Environmental Services Department is comprised of three Branches, including the Environmental Operations Branch, the Wastewater Operations Branch and the Water Operations Branch.Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s environmental infrastructure and systems including water supply, treatment and distribution systems; wastewater collection, treatment and disposal facilities; solid waste collection, diversion and disposal, and environmental investigation and response.

The Maintenance Operator Class II – WwTF position inspects, tests, evaluates, repairs, performs preventative maintenance on, rebuilds and installs mechanical equipment related to wastewater treatment and collection, and biosolids treatment, handling and air emissions. Equipment includes pumps, compressors, compressed air equipment, diesel generators, hydraulic/pneumatic equipment, heat exchangers, boilers, electrical co-generation equipment, solids and liquid handling equipment, filtration and ultraviolet disinfection equipment; rotating biological contactors, high purity oxygen systems, refrigeration equipment and natural/biogas equipment. The position also machines, welds and fabricates parts for equipment rebuild/repair; and completes detailed logs and records of work in accordance with regulatory requirements. In addition, the MOP II acts as a WW Operator, monitoring treatment and collection processes as assigned.

The purpose of the position is to ensure, as part of the WWOB team, that wastewater mechanical equipment is functioning properly and maintained in accordance with legislative/regulatory requirements and manufacturers warranties and/or design standards. This in turn allows continuous operation of WW plant/equipment/systems in keeping with community health needs and sound asset and risk management practices.

The City operates 17 wastewater facilities, the largest being a 76MLD (megalitre/day) Ministry of the

Environment & Climate Change (MOECC) Class IV Wastewater Treatment Facility (WwTF) and a Class III

Wastewater Collection System (WWCS). Each of the 17 facilities is regulated by MOECC Certificates of Approval (CoA) and/or Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECA) and Permits to Take Water (26 documents in total) with conditions that must be met.

Two (2) years of experience (beyond 5-yr apprenticeship) specializing in maintenance of boilers, fuel engines, and refrigeration equipment in a wastewater treatment and collection facility, in a related trade (mechanical/plumbing/refrigeration/millwright/HVAC), or equivalent industrial mechanical experience.

Location: Wastewater Treatment Facility, 249 Bradford Street, Barrie

Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week as per the collective agreement

Wage: This is a Level-6 position in the CUPE Local 2380 bargaining unit with a 2017 pay range of $63,024.00 per year to $75,524.80 per year ($30.30/hr to $36.31/hr).
